Deploy as Skirmishers by the Flank

Deploying skirmishers by the flanks is an under used deployment.  Usually only deployments OFF the file are taught, if any are taught at all.

The commanding officer or senior NCO gives the command:

"Company (unit) deploy as skirmishers BY the (right or left) flank, take intervals, march."

The soldiers then face in the direction of the movement.  Once the soldier nearest the flank anchor reaches his or her interval, the person calls his or her name, stopping them.  That person then calls the name out of the next soldier once his or her interval is reached and so on, until the unit is deployed.  Once a soldier calls out another soldier's name, they automatically front the enemy.

Why deploy by the flank?

Well, one great thing you can do with it is then advance as skirmishers by the flank while firing.  Stay tuned for that in a later post! It's also great if your unit is the first or last company in your battalion and you have an opportunity use more ground without leaving the battalion's line of battle.  There are many great times this movement can be deployed.  Try it out in your company next time you meet.
